With his dying breath, an Albany man who was stabbed in the parking lot of a Bergen County shopping mall identified convicted bank robber Augusto Perez as his killer.
Jurors in Hackensack needed five hours of deliberation to convict the 73-year-old Perez on Friday, April 5, for stabbing Omar Cruz, 64, to death behind the Ulta Beauty store on the Maywood side of the Bergen Town Center on Feb. 16, 2021.

Serial Rapist: Attorney Charged With 4 Attacks In Charlestown in 2007-08, FBI Says
The FBI and Boston police said a New Jersey attorney is behind a string of rapes and kidnappings in Boston more than 15 years ago, officials said. Officials arrested the Weehawken man on Tuesday, May 30.
Matthew Nilo, 35, is charged with three counts of aggravated rape, two counts of kidnapping, one charge of intent to rape, and one account of indecent assault and battery, the Boston Police Department announced. The alleged attacks happened in August and November 2007 and August and December 2008 in Charlestown, authorities said.

Michael Noriega, a Union County resident, has been nominated to be the newest justice on the New Jersey Supreme Court.
Gov. Phil Murphy formally announced Noriega's nomination on Monday, May 15. Noriega, who was born in Weehawken, will be replacing Justice Barry Albin, who reached the mandatory retirement age. Noriega, who was raised in Union City and lives in Fanwood, is Murphy's fourth appointment to the bench.

William Duque, who died on Sunday, April 30 following a bicycle accident, is being remembered as a loving father to his three children, according to his obituary.
Duque, 44, who had been in a coma for several weeks following the accident, was born in Weehawken and lived in North Bergen, his obituary reads.

Shoe Salesman Turned Internist Wrote Himself Bogus Scripts For Years, NJ Authorities Charge
Sagy Grinberg could’ve been a modern-day success story. A former shoe salesman, he went to medical school in the West Indies, got married on top of Mt. Carmel and took a prized residency at Beth Israel Medical Center in Newark.

5.5 Pounds Of Coke Seized In Undercover Hudson County Drug Bust: Prosecutor
Nearly 5.5 pounds of cocaine was seized from three men in an undercover Hudson County drug bust, authorities said.
Nicolas Mora-Daza, 24, of Union City, Christopher Gonzalez, 33 of Union City and John Perez, 31, of Weehawken, sold cocaine to an undercover officer multiple times over the course of a month, Hudson County Prosecutor Esther Suarez said.
Nearly $125,000 worth of cocaine was seized from the trio as a result of a search warrant at a Weehawken home, Suarez said.

A funeral is scheduled this Friday, March 18, for a Hudson County firefighter who died suddenly last week.
Terence “Terry” Shevlin, 44, followed in the footsteps of his father, the late Edward Flood, in becoming a career firefighter.
The lifelong Weehawken resident joined North Hudson Regional Fire and Rescue in September 2007.
"Very early on in Terry’s career, his 'tell it like it is' attitude, passion to serve, and his drive to make anything he’s involved in the best that it could be, gained the respect of his peers," Shevlin's obituary notes.
