Newark Residents Arrested After Human Trafficking Ring Busted: State AG Seven people have been arrested in the dismantling two human trafficking rings, one in North Jersey and one in South Jersey, authorities said. The rings were based in Essex County and Cumberland County, state Attorney General Matthew Platkin said at a news conference on Tuesday, Dec. 3. Khailah Meekins, 21 and Donte Barkley, 28, both Newark residents, trafficked two 15-year-olds and a 13-year-old in Essex County, Platkin said. Paterson Man Convicted Of Sexually Assaulting 10-Year-Old For Two Years: Prosecutor A 54-year-old Paterson man was convicted on Monday, Dec. 2 of sexually assaulting a 10-year-old, authorities said. Cirilo Tello sexually abused the child on multiple occasions between October 2020 and October 2022 at a residence in Paterson, Passaic County Prosecutor Camelia Valdes said. The victim's brother was present during the assaults, Valdes said. A jury convicted Tello of two counts of sexual assault and two counts of endangering the welfare of a child, Valdes said. Tello will be sentenced next month, Valdes said.

Delivery Vehicle Left Running Stolen: Harrison PD A food delivery vehicle that was left running was stolen in Harrison on the evening of Monday, Dec. 2, authorities said. At 7:30 p.m., officers responded to the 500 block of Bergen Street where a delivery driver for a local restaurant said he left his vehicle unlocked and running as he delivered food to a customer, Harrison police said. As the delivery driver was at the customers door, a red sedan pulled up near his vehicle, and the suspect exited the red sedan, entered his vehicle, and fled the area, police said.

Two Charged In Crash That Injured Kearny Moped Operator On Super Bowl Sunday: Prosecutor Two Kearny residents were arrested and charged on Monday, Dec. 2 after a moped operator was seriously injured in a crash on Super Bowl Sunday authorities said. On Sunday, Feb. 11, a moped operator was struck by a cargo van in the area of Harrison Avenue and Bergen Avenue in Kearny, Hudson County Prosecutor Esther Suarez said. 18-Year-Old Fatally Shot In Newark: Prosecutor A 18-year-old Elizabeth resident was killed after being shot in the head on Sunday, Dec. 1 in Newark, authorities said. Wes Thalerand was fatally shot at 9 p.m. at 188 Huntington Avenue, the Essex County Prosecutor's Office said. He was pronounced dead at University Hospital in Newark, authorities said. The investigation is ongoing, authorities said.

Fire Engulfs Commercial Building In Summit: Authorities A fire tore through a commercial building in Summit on the evening of Monday, Dec. 2, authorities said. At 7:10 p.m., the Summit Fire Department responded to a fire at 789 Springfield Ave., which houses several businesses, a spokesperson for the city said. On arrival, crews found the fire in the attic space of the building and extinguished it, authorities said. Crews determined the fire was caused by a malfunctioning exterior light fixture, authorities said. Damage was mostly contained to the outside of the building and no injuries reported, authorities said.

Randolph Teen Fatally Struck By Vehicle: Prosecutor An 18-year-old Randolph resident was fatally struck by a vehicle on the evening of Friday, Nov. 29, authorities said. Maria Lorena Orellana-Valverde was struck by a 2022 Honda HRV at the intersection of Route 10 and Cedar Grove Road, the Morris County Prosecutor's Office said. Orellana-Valverde was transported to Morristown Medical Center, where she succumbed to her injuries, authorities said. The incident remains under investigation, authorities said.
